Litter Committee Minutes
June 23, 2003

Discussion centered on the Big Sweep, scheduled for Sept 13.

  • We’ll probably have on hand water, bananas, and other snack food such as PowerBars.
  • Stewards will need to recruit a second person to serve at the set-up table. They should keep track of the most interesting trash and count bags, distribute information about FOSC, and discuss issues affecting the park.
  • We’ll give frogs again to Stewards, for children to find.
  • Lauren will tell every Scout, and probably every other child she meets, to bring 25 friends to the Sweep!
  • Marty Ittner presented her anti-litter flyer/designs (based on different colorful themes such as birds, fish, insects, etc..) for apartment dwellers. These were very well received. The committee agreed that the anti-litter designs should be incorporated into Sweep-the-Creek tee shirts that we could distribute in advance of Sept. 13 to Stewards and others. Marty will look into this further.
  • Sally and Bill Erwin will serve as Gofers.
  • Ed will get publicity information out to Ann Hoffnar.and will consider also getting it to the Sierra Newsletter.
  • Certificates will be given generously for contest winners. The biggest winners will have their photo and accomplishment put up on our website.
  • Lauren will assemble a list of HOAs, and contact them as time allows.
  • Ed will acquire gloves and all other materials as needed, including First Aid kits, insurance waiver forms, and sturdy trash bags. [The Potomac Conservancy will again kindly cover us for insurance on both July 19 and Sept. 13.] We’ll also buy enough pick-up poles so each section has at least one (short handles in upper sections, long in lower).
  • Stewards on duty for the Sweep will be invited to one earlier meeting for hand-outs and a run-through, and an exchange of cell phone numbers.
  • Publicity: Flyers will be sent to civic associations, churches, schools, and will be put in the park itself by stewards.

Other
We’ll try to keep the Litter Page of our Website up to date, and we’ll include minutes of meetings there. Also, links and information on the county’s Solid Waste program. We need to put a notice for the Sweep on the front page, with buttons for section meeting sites.

The committee agreed to a follow-up clean-up in lower Sligo Creek (Section 1) with Anne Kitchell. Ed Murtagh has been in contact with David Woodward, President of the Hillwood Manor Civic Association. David is interested in working with FOSC on this event. The committee agreed to a July 19 date. Ed Murtagh will prepare the flyer and help coordinate the event with Anne Kitchell.
