In response to the Water WatchDog report photo taken by a Seven Oaks-Evanswood resident in Silver Spring, DEP’s Steve Martin quickly identified the red liquid as “thriving iron bacteria”, which can occur under certain conditions. Steve provided two fact sheets on this phenomenon (which we see fairly often). According to the fact sheets, iron bacteria, while unsightly, is typically nothing to worry about.
