In response to Water WatchDog email pollution report, DEP investigator Gretchen Ekstrom checked out the Bennington Tributary a few hours later. By that time, the considerable volume of melting snow had washed whatever pollution I had spotted downstream, and the outfalls and the stream were running clear. However, taking a close look at what was pooling around the edge of the stream, Gretchen surmised that I had observed a mix of salt and vehicle discharge that the snow had washed off the impervious roadway surface. Her assessment tallied with what I had seen in the stream. A nasty urban mix had run through our water, probably all too typical after a snow melt or rain.
